Minneriya National Park – Witness Sri Lanka’s Greatest Elephant Gathering
Minneriya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife destinations, renowned for its incredible elephant population and breathtaking natural landscapes. Located in the North Central Province, the park is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers seeking an authentic safari experience.
Originally declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1938, Minneriya was officially designated as a National Park on 12 August 1997 to protect the rich biodiversity of the region and the important catchment area surrounding the historic Minneriya Tank.
Home of the Great Elephant Gathering
Minneriya National Park is internationally celebrated for “The Gathering,” one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles. During the dry season, hundreds of Asian elephants migrate from the surrounding forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee to the shores of the ancient Minneriya Tank in search of water and fresh grass.
Watching these magnificent elephants feed, bathe, and socialize in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of any visit to Sri Lanka.
A Park Rich in History and Wildlife
At the heart of the park lies the historic Minneriya Reservoir, built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. This remarkable ancient irrigation system continues to support the park’s diverse ecosystem and provides water for countless species throughout the year.
In addition to elephants, visitors may encounter Sri Lankan leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild buffalo, wild boar, crocodiles, and over 170 species of birds, making Minneriya one of the country’s finest wildlife destinations.
